All About Warts

How do you get warts? Warts are caused by a virus that enters the body through a break in the skin. The virus is known as the human papillomavirus (HPV), there are actually over 100 identified strains of the virus.

Warts are persistant skin growths  that are more common in children than adults, although they can develop at any age.

Warts are usually painless, except for those on the soles of the feet. These are called plantar warts, and if you have one it can feel like you are walking on a small pebble.

The viruses that cause warts are passed from person to person by close physical contact. Warts can be sexually transmitted where they appear in the genital area, but most warts affect the fingers, hands, and feet.

There are many different types of warts.  Warts can appear as single bumps or in clusters, most warts have a cauliflower structure:

Flat Wart: A flat wart is a smooth small flat flesh colored wart. They usually appear on the hands, wrists, knees, neck and face. While they are small, they often appear in large numbers.

Mosaic Wart: These warts appear in a cluster on the hands or on the bottom of the feet.

Common Wart: A wart of this type normally appears on the hands and on the knees. These types of warts have a rough surface like a cauliflowe and are raised.

Plantar Wart: They are hard with black dots in the middle and are found on the bottom of the feet. These can be painful in the way that waking with a pebble in your shoe can be painful. Due to the pressure of walking, most plantar warts are not found above the surface of the skin, but rather under the skin.

Genital Wart: These are found in the genital area. These are also known as venereal warts. Genital warts may develop in the vagina, on the labia (lips of the vagina), or around the anus. In men, warts may develop on the shaft of the penis, in the hair at the base of the penis, or on the "head" of the penis

Filiform Wart: These types of warts are found on the face including around the eyes and lips.

Warts can disappear without treatment. But if you are troubled with persistant warts, they can be treated.

Typical treatment through a medical office may include:  Freezing with liquid nitrogen, electrodesiccation (destroying the wart with an electrical current), immunotherapy and  laser surgery. Many of these methods are painful and reappearances of the warts often occur after such treatment.

There are natural home remedies available which are well worth checking out. It is important to eliminate the virus completely.

Warts are not pretty. They are embarrassing. Thankfully, they are generally not painful (except for plantar warts). While they can go away by themselves, natural remedies that you can apply at home are available, if the warts persist.
