misdiagnosis-mesothelioma-min

Some of the early signs of pleural mesothelioma, such as a persistent cough, fatigue, shortness of breath or chest pain can initially imitate those of other respiratory conditions: asthma, tuberculosis, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Mesothelioma can as well be misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma, pulmonary fibrosis or lung cancer, a situation that would wrongly imply a different type of treatment. There are also cases when patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, which develops in the tissue that surrounds the abdominal cavity, have been informed by their doctors that they are suffering from some common gastrointestinal condition such as irritable bowel syndrome before learning their problem is actually way more dangerous. Symptoms like abdominal pain, build up of gas, unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite commonly contributes to a wrong diagnosis regarding peritoneal mesothelioma. it's a kitty box litter mystery.

all the little kids and the kitties get poisoned.

and oddly, no one really seems to care.

incidentally, don't stir up the litter box or breathe when you clean it.
and remember, your eyes are entrances as well.

not just your nose and your mouth.

i cherished this quote by anne rice when i was in college way back in the mid 80s. it somehow meant more to me than most ideas at the time. i typed it up, even, and carried it around in my wallet with me so i could read it and keep it close to me, like an explanation, i guess.

"Very few really seek knowledge in this world. Mortal or immortal, few really ask. On the contrary, they try to wring from the unknown the answers they have already shaped in their own minds – justification, explanations, forms of consolation without which they can’t go on. To really ask is to open the door to the whirlwind. The answer may annihilate the question and the questioner."

What is Mesothelioma, what is the cause of mesothelioma, mesothelioma meaning

what is mesothelioma cancer, what are symptoms of mesothelioma, mesothelioma disease, signs of mesothelioma, early symptoms of mesothelioma, early signs of mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that develops from the thin layer of body tissues that covers many of the internal body organs (known as the mesothelium). The most general part affected is the lining of the human lungs and chest wall. Less commonly the lining of the abdomen and rarely the sac surrounding the heart, or the sac surrounding the testis may be affected.

What are signs and symptoms of mesothelioma

Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma includes shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall), chest wall pain and constitutional signs such as unexplained weight loss, cough and fatigue.

Mesothelioma diagnostics, diagnosed with mesothelioma, mesothelioma diagnosis, how to diagnose mesothelioma, diagnosing mesothelioma, mesothelioma life expectancy after diagnosis, diagnosis of mesothelioma, how is mesothelioma diagnosed

The diagnosis may be supposed based on chest X-ray and CT scan result, but must be confirmed either by examining serous effusion cytology or with a biopsy (removing a sample of the suspicious tissue). A thoracoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera into the chest) can be used to get biopsy material, and allows the introduction of substances such as talc to obliterate the pleural space (a procedure called pleurodesis), preventing more fluid from accumulating and pressing on the lung. Despite treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or sometimes surgery, mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis. Research about screening tests for the early detection of mesothelioma is ongoing.

What causes mesothelioma

Mesotheloioma could cause by following active factors;

Environmental exposures

Mesothelioma is a rare and deadly cancer caused by asbestos. whereas other risk factors can boost the chances of developing mesothelioma, asbestos is the only scientifically proven source of the syndrome. At least 80% of mesothelioma patients having a known history of asbestos exposure (and the rest possibly being exposed without their knowledge).

Simian Virus 40 (SV40)

One study showed that in more than half of mesothelioma cases, the patient was also infected with SV40. Extra findings have represented that SV40 may coordinated to the formation of mesothelioma, where it does not obvious to cause mesothelioma on its own.

Radiation Exposure

In a handful of cases, mesothelioma patients have claimed their cancer was caused by radiation exposure, rather than asbestos exposure. While radiation has been linked to the development of some cancers, the link between radiation and mesothelioma is yet to be confirmed.

Smoking

Smoking directly not developing mesothelioma but, individuals who smoke and who are exposed to asbestos have a to a large extent higher risk of developing asbestos-caused lung cancer

Genetic disposition

In a recent research carried on white American population in 2012, it was found that people with a germline mutation in their BAP1 gene are at greater risks of mounting mesothelioma and uveal melanoma

Erionite

Erionite is a zeolite mineral with similar properties to asbestos and is known to cause mesothelioma. Detailed epidemiological investigation has shown that erionite causes mesothelioma mostly in families with a genetic predisposition. Erionite is bring into being in deposits in the Western United States, where it is used in gravel for road surfacing, and in Turkey, where it is used to build homes. In Turkey, the United States, and Mexico, erionite has been associated with mesothelioma and has thus been designated a “known human carcinogen” by the US National Toxicology Program.

Carbon Nanotube

A few studies have proved at carbon nanotubes, and other high aspect ratio nanoparticles (HARNs), as potential causes of mesothelioma. However further research is necessary to prove this claim.

How Long Can You Live With Mesothelioma? mesothelioma survival rates, mesothelioma rates, surviving mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma survival rate, mesothelioma death rate, mesothelioma survival, survival rate of mesothelioma, mesothelioma survival rate

This question is generally asked by those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal kind of cancer caused by asbestos. Unluckily, as with most diseases, there is no one correct answer to how long a mesothelioma patient will be in this world.

Mesothelioma Survival Rates:

6 months after diagnosis 55%

1 year after diagnosis 33%

5 years after diagnosis 9%

Survival Rate for Mesothelioma Are Improving

The good information is that continued existence and survival rates for mesothelioma patients are improving. A 2015 meta-study looked at 20 years worth Of 1992 – 2012, and during that period the two major forms of mesothelioma (pleural and peritoneal) have both considered upgrading of survivorship.

Mesothelioma Survival Rate by category Life Expectancy by Mesothelioma Cell Type:

1-year Pleural 73% Peritoneal 92% Pericardial 51%

3-years Pleural 23% Peritoneal 74% Pericardial 26%

5-years Pleural 12% Peritoneal 65% Pericardial 23%

10-years Pleural 4.7% Peritoneal 39% Pericardial (N/A)

According to the research, peritoneal mesothelioma survivorship has especially presented important enhancement, largely due to new forms of cure, such as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Lung cancer and mesothelioma are two separate conditions. Lung cancer originates in cells of the lungs, and mesothelioma originates in the mesothelium, the tissue surrounding the lungs.
Lung cancer can have various causes, but malignant mesothelioma only appears as a result of asbestos exposure. The cancer starts in the cells in the lining of the lungs by influencing the cells to grow out of control and cause tumors. Long-term, short-term and even one-time exposure to asbestos can lead to the development of mesothelioma.
When asbestos fibers are inhaled or ingested, they become lodged in the mesothelial tissue surrounding the lungs and cause scarring of the affected lung, inflammation, cellular mutations and damage that leads to the development of malign tumors. It usually takes 20 to 50 years before any mesothelioma symptoms appear. Visit www.elglaw.com for more information.

During the past century, asbestos was commonly present in a lot of occupational settings by virtue of its remarkable fireproofing and insulating properties. While the construction and shipbuilding industries are notorious for their massive asbestos use, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health estimates that over 75 groups of workers were exposed to this toxic mineral on the job. As a result, asbestos-related diseases are incredibly widespread nowadays, causing up to 15,000 deaths in the U.S. every year.

William (Bill) Searle

Sad news that Bill died last Thursday (2nd March 2017).

Bill had mesothelioma, and was given 6 months to live about 6 years ago (I think). He was actively involved in the 'South West Mesothelioma Support Group' and as Managing Director of 'Cutlass Engineering', he sponsored the iPlymouth Calendar in 2013 and 2014.

Even after sponsorship moved to Wolferstans, he was responsible for selling a great number of our calendars and raising thousands of pounds for the Support Group.

He attended a few of our Breakfast Meets, and each time bought far too many raffle tickets - meaning prizes were 'put back in' over and over again!!

Rest in peace, Bill.
